BMW ALPINA B6 BITURBO

Powertrain

Continuous development of the 4.4 litre V8 Bi-Turbo engine has resulted in a number of upgrades leading to a significant increase in power output. The engine now develops 441 kW (600 hp) at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 800 Nm between 3500 and 4500 rpm.

Two specifically constructed large diameter turbo-chargers operating in parallel are primarily responsible for achieving a high power and torque output over a very broad rpm range without sacrificing spontaneous throttle response at low rpm. The high-performance indirect inter-cooler system with a short intake system consists of a large-volume low-temperature inter-cooler and two engine-near inter-coolers. Additional oil and water coolers are located just behind the front spoiler and ensure the overall thermodynamic efficiency of the engine. Extensive optimisation of the air intake ducting and air filter housing leads to a substantial reduction of losses which together with an uprated fuel supply system results in the hike in output of 41 kW (60 hp) from previously 540 hp.

Inside the cylinders specific MAHLE pistons are designed to deal with temperatures and pressures associated with up to 1.4 bar charging and the engine’s 10.0:1 nominal compression ratio.

Despite its impressive performance characteristics and high specific power output long cruising ranges are achieveable thanks to a combined fuel consumption measured according to ECE norm of 9.4 to 10.4 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of 219 to 242 g/km, depending on the model.

Exhaust System Coupé / Convertible

The lightweight exhaust system made of high-strength titanium was developed in cooperation with the renowned manufacturer of motor sports exhaust systems, namely Akrapovič. Faithful to the guiding principle of ‘form follows function’, the entire system is noted not only for its acoustics and appearance, but also for its technical refinements. In addition to a weight-saving of 45 % compared to the conventional use of stainless steel, the exhaust system also boasts impressive technical details. The engineers from ALPINA and Akrapovic have achieved quite a feat, managing to retain a diameter of 2 x 70mm throughout the entire length of the exhaust system, despite the tricky ‘packaging’. In conjunction with further design refinements, exhaust back-pressure is reduced to an absolute minimum. In interaction with the powerful engine, the exhaust system generates a backdrop of deep, sonorous eight-cylinder sound – powerful, sporty, but never obtrusive, due to an intelligent, controllable exhaust valve. This offers the driver a special degree of influence over the sound experience, and can be controlled using the Dynamic Drive Control. In Comfort+ and Comfort mode the valve is closed, opening only by decisive use of the accelerator. In Sport and Sport+ mode, the exhaust valve remains open at all times for a specially enjoyable sound experience.

Exhaust System Gran Coupé

The construction and design of the stainless steel exhaust system guarantees an elegant, powerful look and a very emotional soundtrack. A reduction of the silencer volume optimises the flow of exhaust gases and saves weight. The special design of the system also focuses on acoustics and does not disappoint, producing a powerful, bass driven eight cylinder soundtrack. An intelligent exhaust valve makes it possible to successfully achieve the balancing act between audible pleasure and long-distance comfort. The exhaust valve is closed when the Dynamic Performance Control is set to Comfort mode and opens depending on load and engine speed. In contrast, it is permanently open in Sport mode, generating an exciting sound experience especially under acceleration. A high-tech lightweight exhaust system made of high-strength titanium developed in cooperation with Akrapovič offers a weight saving of 45 % compared with stainless steel and is optionally available at extra cost.
