Power transmission in the BMW ALPINA B7 Bi-Turbo is taken care of by a new generation of the excellent 8-Speed Sport Automatic Transmission with ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC. Further refined and adapted to the performance characteristics of the high-torque V8 Bi-Turbo in collaboration with ZF, the transmission offers exceptional driving comfort in all situations.

Extended gear steps and a total spread of 7.81:1 improve shift comfort and fuel economy. In Automatic Mode the combination of eight gears and high engine torque makes for relaxed, luxurious cruising at low engine rpm even when travelling at speed.

In Sport Mode the shift points are optimized for improved driving performance and gear changes are considerably more dynamic. For maximum dynamic performance, the driver selects the Manual Mode thereby actuating gear changes manually by using the SWITCH-TRONIC buttons on the back of the steering wheel.

All hardware components of the transmission are designed to specifically cope with the high torque output of the V8 Bi-Turbo engine - meaning that the typical torque reduction during upshifts is not required. This contributes significantly to the striking longitudinal dynamics of the new BMW ALPINA B7 Bi-Turbo with all-wheel drive which accelerates from 0 – 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds!

Transmission - Modes

The 8-speed sport automatic transmission with SWITCH-TRONIC offers three modes of operation to suit any driving situation.

In Automatic (D) Shift Mode the blend of eight speeds and high torque makes for super smooth gear changes only a torque converter can provide. Explicitly programmed for maximum comfort, the B7 Bi-Turbo glides effortlessly and efficiently at low rpm and high gears, offering unmatched cruising ability.

In Sport (S) Shift Mode the transmission becomes significantly more dynamic, gear changes are executed faster and feedback becomes more direct. The system allows for multi-simultaneous down-shifts in milliseconds, hereby the transmission will skip several gears depending on engine loads and rpm to select the most favourable gear for optimum acceleration.

The Manual (M) Shift Mode allows full control over the transmission. The ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC buttons are ergonomically mounted on the rear of the steering wheel, their actuation allowing the driver to shift up or down as required. A unique feature of the transmission software in Manual (M) Shift Mode in combination with the selection of Sport, Sport+ or DSC OFF Mode using the Driving Dynamics Control button is the deactivation of the automatic up-shift function. In this mode of operation the transmission will hold the selected gear up to maximum rpm’s (electronically limited) and will not automatically up-shift into the next gear. This is desirable in certain driving situations, for example during especially dynamic driving on roads with multiple tight hair-pin corners.
